JLPT
(Japanese Language Proficiency Test)
JLPT or Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験 in Japanese), is a test which indicates your Japanese language skills level. The certificate you get, is usable for applying for jobs or visas in Japan. Most commonly JLPT level N1 or N2 will be required as minimum from employers.
The test is divided into 5 levels called N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. The lower number the higher level, so N1 is the highest level, where N5 is the easiest.
JLPT consist of a number of elements, like reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary, kanji,
Japanese authorities judge your Japanese level based on this test. Due to a point system introduced some years ago, the higher score you can show, the better chance you have for getting a visa.

JLPT N1 is the highest and most difficult level of JLPT. More than half of the total number of kanjis, namely 1136 kanjis, is what you need to memorize extra, from mastering JLPT N2, to master a total of 2136 kanjis to pass JLPT N1. If you reach this level, you will be able to participate in most type of conversations, read much of the newspapers etc.
This is the level most employers in Japan would like you to master. It will take you several years to reach this level, but software like Memorizeitall can help you reach it faster.
JLPT N3
With JLPT N3, the expectation to the student increases and you will be required to memorize 370 kanjis to get the N3 certificate. The ability to read everyday Japanese will increase and there will be less difficulties with daily topic conversations.
JLPT N5
JLPT N5, is the very basic level of Japanese. If you have this certificate, you have an understanding of some of the basic Japanese language.
You should have mastered Hiragana and Katakana, which is the two phonetic alphabets in Japan. You will also have learned about 80 of the very basic kanjis and you should be able to have a simple conversation in Japanese.

JLPT N2
JLPT N2 is the second highest level for JLPT. At this level you should have memorized around 1000 kanjis. To pass JLPT N2 level, it requires you to memorize a total of 1000 kanjis, of which 380 are level N2 kanjis. So if you memorize 10 kanjis a week, it will take you 38 weeks. You also need to memorize a vast number of vocabulary as well as grammar and improve listening and reading skills.

JLPT N4
JLPT N4 is the second easiest level of the JLPT.
At this level, you should be able to read and write some of the very basic kanjis. You will have learned 170 new kanjis studying JLPT N4.
If you have this certificate, you should also be able to follow daily topic Japanese conversation if spoken slowly.
